The Adventures of the Dixie Chicks: Our Mischievous Sheep Trio

Let me introduce you to the Dixie Chicks!

When we first started our farm, I wanted goats and my husband wanted sheep. We compromised by getting four goats and two sheep. It didn’t take long for me to fall head over heels for the sheep, and before I knew it, I wanted more! That’s when my husband found three ewes that a farmer was getting rid of because they were supposedly “not good moms.”

I was beyond excited to bring them home, but little did we know the adventure we were about to embark on! These three were nothing but trouble from the start. When they arrived, my husband placed them in the front pasture. Not even a day went by before they escaped into the back pasture — something even our goats have never attempted.

Farmer Ryan went out to herd them back to the front, but in true Dixie Chicks fashion, they had minds of their own. They jumped the fence and headed straight for the road. My husband called me for backup, and there I was, running down the road in my pajamas and flip-flops in the pouring rain. Somewhere along the way, I lost my flip-flops in the mud, but I managed to intercept them just before they reached the road.

The sheep saw me, turned around, and bolted back to the back pasture. It took us three whole days to catch them. Yes, three days! We managed to catch one sheep each day until all three were safely in the barn.

It took time and patience, but eventually, the Dixie Chicks began to trust us (well, kind of) and even started coming when called. These girls were WILD at first, but over time, they calmed down and blossomed into incredible mothers on our farm.

Since joining us, the Dixie Chicks have given us some beautiful lambs and plenty of hilarious stories (not to mention a few minor injuries). Despite all their antics, they’ve earned a special place in our hearts.

Interestingly, all our farm animals have names—except for these three. From the very beginning, they’ve just been “the Dixie Chicks.” And honestly, it suits them perfectly!

The Dixie Chicks have taught us a lot about perseverance, patience, and humor in the face of chaos. Life on the farm wouldn’t be the same without them!
